HOW EZIUM CAME TO BE
From the creator, Dr. Teena Middleton:
Have you ever had a horse that you just knew had lots of talent but they were always too “something” to achieve their potential? For me, that horse was “MUSIC OF MY HEART." Everyday was something different - too tight, too reactive, too sensitive…..you name it. I tried everything before I discovered the power of chelated magnesium. However, there was no affordable chelated magnesium option that was easy to feed, which was why I invented EZium!
I never intended to go into business, I only wanted a pelleted supplement in my feedroom that soothed my "savage beast." Friends saw how it transformed “MUSIC,” wanted the same results for their horses, and EZium was born. If it worked for “MUSIC,” I know it will work for you.
Choosing the Right Product
Do I need more than one EZium product?
No, you only need to feed the EZium supplement that best fits your horse's current needs. EZium Metabolic and EZium+ Enteric include everything in regular EZium, plus added ingredients to support metabolic and gastrointestinal health.
Each formula builds on the previous:
- EZium (Original): Daily magnesium support for stress, focus, and muscle relaxation
- EZium Metabolic: Everything in EZium plus chromium
- EZium+ Enteric: Everything in EZium Metabolic + targeted gut health ingredients
Which EZium product should I choose?
The difference comes down to how much support your horse needs.
Here’s a quick guide:
- To manage basic stress and tension: EZium
- For medium stress and/or metabolic concerns: EZium Metabolic
- For high stress and/or gut sensitivity: EZium+ Enteric
Should I upgrade to a higher formula?
If your horse has more than one challenge (stress + metabolism, or stress + digestion), or isn’t responding as expected, upgrading usually makes sense. Higher-tier formulas are designed for stacked stressors, not just one issue.
Magnesium & Your Horse
Why does my horse need magnesium? Don’t they get enough from their current feed?
Horses already consume magnesium in hay and feed, but much of it isn’t in a form they can absorb.
Even high-quality forage can provide several grams per day, but availability is the limiting factor. EZium provides magnesium in a chelated form your horse can actually use, absorbed over 4x better than most other forms.
Could my horse be magnesium deficient?
If your horse is in work, under stress, or competing, the answer is often yes. Stress, sweating, and exercise all increase magnesium demand, and deficiency is more common than most people realize.
What are the signs of magnesium deficiency?
Magnesium plays a key role in nerve and muscle function. When levels are low, everything becomes more reactive.
Common signs include:
- Nervousness, tension, or reactivity
- Spooking or hypersensitivity
- Difficulty focusing
- Muscle tightness or soreness
- Resistance to training
Isn’t it possible to test magnesium levels?
No, because most magnesium isn’t in the blood. Only about 1% is circulating, while the majority is stored in bone and cells. Blood tests often look normal even when a horse is deficient, so symptoms are the best indicator.
What does magnesium actually do in the body?
Magnesium is involved in over 300 biological processes, including:
- Muscle relaxation
- Nerve signaling
- Energy production
- Inflammation regulation
- Glucose metabolism
It’s a foundational nutrient for overall health, not just behavior.
How does magnesium affect stress in horses?
Stress depletes magnesium. When a horse is under stress:
- Adrenaline is released
- Magnesium is pulled from body stores
- The body excretes more magnesium
Over time, this creates a cycle where low magnesium leads to a stronger stress response. EZium helps restore balance and improves your horse’s ability to handle stress.
Is EZium a calming supplement?
No. EZium doesn’t sedate your horse; it supports normal nerve and muscle function. When those systems are balanced, horses naturally become calmer, more focused, and easier to train. EZium is designed to be fed daily as part of your horse’s regular nutrition program.
What results should I expect, and how soon?
Most customers report:
- Improved focus and rideability
- Reduced spooking or reactivity
- Better tolerance to work
- Improved movement and relaxation
Many see results within two to three weeks, sometimes sooner. Magnesium deficiency doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes time for symptoms to resolve.
What makes EZium different from other magnesium supplements?
EZium uses magnesium glycinate, a chelated form that is absorbed differently than standard mineral sources. Instead of breaking apart and competing with other nutrients in the digestive system, it stays intact and is absorbed efficiently. This allows your horse to actually use the magnesium, rather than losing much of it during digestion.
Other products have more magnesium. Isn’t that better?
Not if your horse can’t absorb it. A higher number on the label doesn’t necessarily mean your horse is getting more usable magnesium. Many supplements rely on inexpensive forms like magnesium oxide, which are poorly absorbed, so a significant portion is simply wasted. What matters is how much your horse can actually use, not just the number on the bag.
Metabolic Support
What is EZium Metabolic?
EZium Metabolic includes everything in the original EZium, plus chromium to support:
- Insulin function
- Glucose metabolism
- Stress response
Why is chromium important?
Chromium is an essential nutrient involved in insulin-dependent processes such as carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism. Chromium works together with magnesium to help insulin bind efficiently to cellular receptors responsible for glucose uptake. Every cell in the horse relies on glucose to fuel its function and growth. Chromium has also been shown to reduce cortisol, a stress hormone, thereby reducing the negative impacts of stress and improving overall performance.
When should I use EZium Metabolic?
It’s a great fit for horses that are:
- Showing signs of metabolic imbalance (EMS, laminitis, Cushing’s, etc.)
- Under consistent stress
- Recovering from injury
- Pregnant or nursing
- Easy keepers
How does KemTRACE® Chromium differ from the chromium in other products?
KemTRACE® Chromium propionate is manufactured by Kemin Equine under strict quality control and quality assurance specifications from materials sourced entirely in the United States. It is registered in more than 30 countries and is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration-reviewed form of chromium propionate.
Gut Health & Enteric Support
What is EZium+ Enteric?
EZium+ Enteric is our most advanced formula, combining:
- Chelated magnesium (glycinate)
- KemTRACE© Chromium propionate
Targeted gut support ingredients:
- ButiPearl© Z EQ: zinc & butyric acid
- Clostat©: active microbial (Bacillus subtilis)
When should I use EZium+ Enteric?
It’s ideal for horses that:
- Experience consistent high stress
- Travel or compete frequently
- Have digestive sensitivity (even mild)
- Show inconsistent behavior or performance
- Struggle with stress or routine changes
- Exhibit symptoms of Leaky Gut Syndrome
What is the “gut-brain connection,” and why does it matter?
The gut and brain are closely connected through a communication system often referred to as the gut-brain axis. In horses, digestive health plays a major role in behavior, focus, and how well they handle stress. When the gut is disrupted, it can show up as tension, reactivity, or inconsistent performance. EZium+ Enteric is designed to support both sides of that connection by combining highly absorbable magnesium and chromium with targeted gut support ingredients, helping your horse stay more balanced from the inside out.
Does my horse really need gut support?
Not every horse, but many benefit from it. If your horse is high-performance, frequently traveling, or extremely sensitive, gut health is often part of the bigger picture.
Safety & Feeding
Are EZium products show-safe?
Yes. All EZium products are safe to use while showing all classes of horses. Our products contain no prohibited substances and are safe under all major equine competition regulations. We use ingredients approved for feeding to horses by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Can I feed EZium with other supplements?
Yes. EZium is designed to work alongside any feeding program.
What dose should I use?
Start with the recommended daily serving of once scoop twice a day. This dose is also appropriate for miniature horses, ponies, and donkeys. You can increase the dose of any EZium product as needed based on symptoms and response.
Are EZium products appropriate for miniature horses, ponies, mules, or donkeys?
Yes. EZium products are safe and appropriate for all equine types, including miniature horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys. We recommend starting with the standard dose of one scoop twice a day and adjusting as needed based on individual response.
Longear and easy-keeper types are often more susceptible to metabolic challenges, and magnesium can play an important role in supporting normal glucose metabolism and overall balance. EZium Metabolic can be especially helpful in these cases as part of a well-managed feeding program. If you’re unsure what’s best for your animal, feel free to reach out and we’re happy to help you determine the right approach.
Does EZium have an expiration date?
No. EZium products do not expire as long as they are stored properly. We recommend keeping your EZium inside a sealed bag and/or container in a cool, dry place.
What if my horse won’t eat the EZium product I ordered?
EZium is designed to be highly palatable, and most horses accept it readily. All horses are different, and some may need a short adjustment period. Introducing EZium gradually or mixing it with a small amount of a favorite feed can help ease the transition. If your horse is still hesitant, try wetting or soaking their entire feed ration. This helps the EZium pellets soften and blend in more naturally. Feeding with something like soaked beet pulp or a mash can also improve acceptance.
👉 EZium+ Enteric has a natural peppermint-leaning flavor that some horses find especially appealing, and it can be a good option for particularly picky eaters. Feel free to reach out with any questions and we’re happy to help you figure out what works best for your horse.
Are EZium products safe for pregnant or lactating mares?
Yes. All ingredients in our products are approved for feeding to all classes of horses.
Can I feed EZium to foals or young horses?
Yes. In fact, young and growing horses often have higher magnesium needs.
Is it possible to give my horse too much magnesium?
It’s very difficult through normal feeding. Horses regulate magnesium effectively. Excess is typically not absorbed and may result in loose stool, which resolves once intake is adjusted. Deficiency is far more common than excess.
Can magnesium cause ulcers?
No. Magnesium does not increase stomach acid and is actually often used in antacids. If anything, stress (which depletes magnesium) is more closely linked to ulcer risk, not magnesium supplementation.
What percentage of non-structural carbohydrates does EZium contain?
EZium contains less than 6% Non-Structural Carbohydrates. Feed it with confidence knowing that the ingredients will not contribute significantly to the total NSC in your horse's diet.
What happens if I stop feeding EZium?
Your horse will soon return to their previous baseline if the underlying stress is still present.
Where is EZium manufactured?
All EZium products are manufactured in the United States at a specialized feed facility with over 30 years of experience producing high-quality animal nutrition products. This facility is committed to the highest standards of ingredient quality and safety, including “Safe Feed, Safe Food” certification through the American Feed Industry Association. EZium is produced in controlled small batches to ensure the highest level of quality in every product.
